GoodFly for ACU is the solution developed by GoodWorks for the migration of ACUCOBOL programs to Visual COBOL for .Net.
GoodFly for ACU is designed to enable a typical ACUCOBOL application to benefit of all the advantages provided by Visual Cobol, while minimazing the need to re-work exhisting programs.
GoodFly for ACU is able to convert in Visual Cobol also "character based" applications enabling an easy and fast porting to the new technology while adding the graphical style to the application.
GoodFLY for ACU solution is based on two main technical components:
GW_FrameWork: the solution that enables to deploy Visual Cobol graphical applications through multiple platforms and channels, with the option "write once use everywhere";
GW_Converter: the tool for the automatic migration of ACUCOBOL programs source code to Visual Cobol applications relying on GW_FrameWork for the GUI management.
GW_FrameWork is a library working in conjunction with Visual Cobol runtime. It handles the application User Interface in a .Net environment. GW_FrameWork performs an architecture based on the separation between Business Logic and User Interface: it allows to keep untouched the logic of the original program while becoming able to deploy through different channels its user interface.
GW_Converter is the tool developed by GoodWorks for the automatic migration of ACUCOBOL programs to Visual Cobol. It works in conjunction with the GW_FrameWork. The main features of this tool are:
Automatic separation: the tool is able to migrate the source code by making a separation between business logic and user interface: the business logic is migrated into a Visual Cobol program, while the user interface becomes a GUI based on WPF technology.
Migrated programs are easy to be maintained: thanks to the Converter the programming logic to which the developer is used to remains untouched; moreover, the source code becomes clearer and tidier. Developers will be able to modify it within the new Visual Cobol environment without any difficulty.
Handwritten programs can be managed as well: also all handwritten programs, whose user interface had to be mainteined via time-consuming manual decoding, can be handled by the Converter. Screens are migrated into a format that can be edited using Visual Cobol editors, allowing their further maintenance completely integrated with the new development tool.

SUCCESS STORIES
We develop and distribute a production control application for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries compliant to GMP and FDA regulation. We needed to convert this application from RM Cobol to Visual Cobol aiming to get a remarkable improvement of the user interface while retaining all the data processing functions (almost 70% of the entire application). The solution suggested by GoodWorks was to use a Java-based GUI while preserving in Visual Cobol all the data processing logic. We'd like to thank GoodWorks both for the effective solution suggested and for the consultancy and support they provided us during the critical phases of the conversion project. They proved to be responsive and highly experienced in solving each problem we presented to them. This collaboration was very profitable for us.
